Be Ocean My Friend is an awareness project, mainly. UPlanet has sought to emphasize the need to promote activities focused on care and participation in environmental issues. As is well known, the ecological changes caused by human beings are counted for miles around the world, near where the project has been developed is the example of the Mar Menor. With this project we wanted to show the fragility of ecosystems such as the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, if it is subjected to environmental stress, either acting detrimentally or ignoring the changes that occur. In Be Ocean My Friend we have tried to find new forms of awareness through activities in contact with nature that stimulate the curiosity of the participants. To carry out the activities, we have relied on those who best know the land, who are the local actors. As in the Mar Menor, it is the citizens, who first detect the change that occurs in the environment, with this project we want to create awareness so that young Europeans develop capacities to see which are those factors that show that an ecosystem is changing due to to human action. The place chosen was the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, in Andalusia, it is the space with the largest surface area and ecological relevance in the Mediterranean Sea. Along its 80 kilometers of coastline, the Park is home to incredible biodiversity in a semi-desert-like environment, as well as a protected maritime area of 12,000 ha. of extension in which more than a thousand species between flora and fauna live. According to the Association of Friends of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, the park is an area under threat, especially in the summer season, to being one of the main destinations of mass tourism that is poorly monitored and controlled. This, accompanied by an increase in urbanization and the construction of hotels on land in the Park identified as C1 zones, that is, areas of agricultural cultivation and non-urbanizable areas. The low interest in the effective and rigorous protection of the park, together with the little knowledge of tourist practices and activities that are not harmful to the environment, can have very serious long-term environmental consequences. In this context, the territory hosts associations and groups of civil society committed to caring for the territory through awareness, monitoring and training activities of a different nature. UPlanet was born to protect the environment and educate for active care and respect. For these reasons, the general objective is and was: Raise awareness, educate and build European networks on environmental issues related to the territory of the Cabo de Gata Park. And with the following specific objectives: - Raise awareness of the environmental problems of the territory of the Cabo de Gata Park with a special focus on the pollution of the marine environment - Disseminate and promote good practices for the care and defense of the environment at an individual and collective level The project aimed to train participants in environmental issues with a real example of a fragile ecological environment that is being affected by human action. In addition to this, it will ensure that local agents get involved in the project and can explain what the reality was that they observed. On the other hand, we wanted the participants to be able to find similarities between this environment and another fragile environment close to their places so that it could motivate them when it comes to finding an environmental cause to defend. Lastly, we wanted to demonstrate that the local is intimately related to the global and that the good (and bad) practices that occurred in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park could be realized in other parts of the EU geography.
