Objectives

Our goal is to support our students to take ownership of their studying and commit themselves to the school work. We wished students to get to know and respect nature and the surrounding environment, learn new ways of working and improve their well-being at school. We wanted to support active participation of our students in the learning process, well-being activities and influencing the surrounding environment and society. Our goal was to diminish the stress that increased heavily due to COVID-19. We believe that promoting student-centered learning and joined teaching enhances well-being at school. Improving studying and learning environments increases student motivation and positive experiences at school, which in turn supports overall well-being. We want our students to learn in which ways they can be active participants and contribute both to their own well-being and to common well-being. Our goal is to increase and strengthen the knowledge of well-being education. The project will influence our school community, our living community, Jääli, and the surrounding society through the ideas and benefits of the courses.

Background

Jääli School is a comprehensive school situated in the city of Oulu. In addition to grades 1-9, Jääli school has three local small groups for students with special needs, five special needs classes (for demanding special needs support) and flexible basic education. The school is located in Jääli Community Centre where also a library, a youth centre and a residential community operate. We wish to strenghthen well-being of our school community, which in turn supports the well-being of our students and their participation in well-being activities. Our goal is to enhance the knowledge of well-being education considering nature and the environment as an essential part of well-being. We would like to develop teaching methods, learning environments and good practices for joined teaching. It is essential that children in large classes learn to co-operate in different kinds of groups and pairs, and children with special educational needs are taken into account. We would like to develop outdoor class activities, inquiry -based and student-centered learning, and support involving students as active participants. We want to encourage our school community to participate in well-being activities and improve overall well-being at school.
