Game is not just a game was a training Course for youth workers that connected traditional everyday board games, educational board games, design thinking, storytelling and other non formal education methods in everyday youth work and educational practices. This training was especially needed when working with young people to promote different topics such as values, environment, personal development and mental health, topics that might be harder to handle in personal conversations or through other methods in groups, but can be easier to handle through a role in a game. As needed as topics mentioned earlier are debriefing and de-roling skills that participants learned in different activities during this training. With this Training Course we aimed at creating insights, possibilities and experience around competence development for youth, as well as offered tools for youth workers who need them in their daily work. These game-based methods are very accessible & low-cost, are very instinctive and don’t need prior skills or more than basic knowledge, very fitting for people working around a variety of topics in their youth work practices. Our training course was based on non-formal and experiential education with a self-directed learning approach with strong support for learning through daily reflection of learning. Through the project we provided youth workers with game based tools and methods to support the young people they work with.
