Objectives

The objectives of the project were to map education and employment needs in the Sámi film industry and study paths to becoming a professional. The objective was also to strengthen cooperation between Sámi Education Institute and International Sámi Film Institute and explore different cooperation models and methods in the future. The goal was also to develop cooperation between educational organisations and working life in the Sámi film industry, to get information on how to develop media education to better meet the labour market needs and to increase the interest of the film industry among Sámi youth.

Background

The Sámi film industry is at a crossroads. The demand for Sámi films has exploded and the number of productions is growing rapidly. The biggest challenge facing the industry today is a shortage of labour. There are simply not enough skilled workers. The Sámi film industry is not able to respond to the growing interest and needs with sufficient volume and speed. The partners in the small-scale partnership project were Sámi Education Institute (SAKK) from Finland and International Sámi Film Institute (ISFI) from Norway. The Finnish partner was the coordinator. SAKK has been educating Sámi region's youth for over 20 years with its media education and ISFI is a pioneer and major supporter of Sámi films. SAKK needs to develop its media education to meet today's needs of the media and film industry in the north and especially in the Sámi region. ISFI needs more Sámi film professionals to be able to support the Sámi film industry in its growing needs. Educational solutions in the coming years, increased funding and cooperation are key in growing the Sámi film industry in accordance with the values and ethics of the Sámi community. When it comes to education, the growing Sámi film industry needs stability and continuity.
