Objectives

At a time when many countries and people were showing dissatisfaction, protesting, and seeking respect for human rights and democracy, many authorities, instead of searching for peaceful resolutions, reacted violently. These violent reactions usually led to an escalation of conflict, increased dissatisfaction, and further violence. Furthermore, these reactions had overall consequences for entire societies, including young people who felt uncertain about their futures and peaceful lives. If we focused solely on Europe, direct violence had escalated in many countries on European soil over the previous two years. Additionally, numerous countries throughout Europe were suffering from human rights violations and armed conflicts. There was a global need to educate as many young people as possible to respond to conflicts nonviolently, with empathy and emotional literacy, in order to break the vicious circle of violence and become leaders in peaceful conflict transformation and resolution. Recognizing this need, we aimed to equip young people with knowledge, skills, and competences in nonviolent conflict transformation and increase their participation in democratic life and civic engagement through non-formal learning processes. Moreover, by bringing together youth workers from diverse backgrounds, we aimed to raise awareness about European identity based on European values, which were founded on peace and equal political participation. In times like these, we were eager to work on theoretical and practical approaches to nonviolent conflict transformation through human rights and peace education. We aimed to equip young people, youth workers, and activists with the skills and competences needed to employ nonviolence in their work, activism, and daily lives. Our aim was to equip 30 youth workers, activists, and trainers with competences in nonviolent conflict transformation, nonviolent communication, and emotional literacy. By doing so, they would become leaders in building a sustainable culture of peace and respect for human rights, working at the grassroots level in their respective communities. Our objectives were as follows: To participants participants with knowledge on concepts on peace, nonviolence, various forms of violence, conflict, peacebuilding, culture of peace and human rights; To understand the importance of nonviolent conflict transformation and its links to the context of human rights; To explore nonviolent conflict transformation in theory; To develop the skills of participants in the field of emotional literacy as a tool of conflict transformation; To equip participants with skills in non-violent communication as a tool of conflict transformation; To provide participants with practical tools for peaceful and nonviolent conflict transformation, mediation and emotional literacy in the context of youth work and youth engagement in conflict-stricken regions; To map the realities in the participating countries on how conflict and violence affect local communities and practicing human rights; To create safe space among participants which would be the base for their future cooperation in the field of sustainable peace and nonviolent conflict resolution and acting as peaceful leaders in their communities; To equip participants with tools to advocate for nonviolent and peaceful conflict resolution, such as peaceful conflict transformation, dialogue creation, nonviolent communication, emotional literacy, active listening, street epistemology and empathy; To facilitate the process of planning at least 6 follow-up activities at the grassroots level leading tackling local conflicts and aiming to its transformation; To support participants in their further engagement through the cocreation of visual educational materials in the field of nonviolent conflict transformation, nonviolent communication and emotional literacy. The issues we sought to address through this training were the increasing violence in our societies and the lack of competences among young people to build dialogue among community members and resolve conflicts in nonviolent ways. The needs we aimed to fulfill with this project were to equip young people with the tools necessary to work on conflict transformation peacefully and to extend this impact by educating more individuals in this field.
