Objectives

Through its field actions, the Jets d’encre organisation notices that the young journalists federated by the association express a lack of both recognition and consideration about their media practices, therefore leading to a feeling of invisibility and illegitimacy to deal with some subjects, compared to mainstream professional media. Enquiries, such as the DJEPVA’s youth barometer published in 2020, indicate that only 49% of young people consider their opinions taken into account in the places they evolve in (at work, school, college, organisation or club). Although the number increases throughout the years, social and geographic disparities remain. Alongside, even if 93% of the 15-30 years old are interested in the news according to Médiamétrie’s study “Les jeunes et l’information'' (Young people and information) published by the Ministry of Culture in 2017, fake news and discernment difficulties lead to a disinterest in current issues. Facing these assessments, Jets d’encre organised a series of 5 “ young press conferences” throughout French territory in order to : - Create meeting times between young journalists and qualified personalities. This project was developed to incite youth speaking in the public sphere and youth commitment. It creates places where committed young people can meet qualified professionals in their domain in order to debate, reflect and exchange. Young people can thus share their experiences and links with various current and social issues with contributors. - Contribute to a necessary media education. The project offers an educational action about media and information through active participation. Young press conferences allow a better understanding and production of information, and forging an opinion on the media world. This journalistic exercise involves taking the information “at the root” but is however scarce for young journalists. It gives them the opportunity to experience it and learn how to reproduce a discourse with a critical view, thus learning how a discourse is built. - Allow young journalists to meet with their peers. The aim is not to create a competition between young people. It is rather an occasion to enhance the value of each person’s work and stimulate creativity, by meeting people with the same interests. The project is also designed to question media and information techniques to take a critical step back through group and individual exchanges. - Make actors and decision-makers aware of the phenomenon of the young press and its place in democratic life. Participation in a media (newspapers, radio, podcasts…) is now an anchored form of commitment, but is still scarcely considered. Through these conferences, Jets d'encre wants to introduce the concept of media initiated by young people to local, regional, national and European actors. As well as the organisation tries to encourage young people to go towards the structures and institutions of their territories, this cycle of conferences is developed to introduce it to the institutions themselves, so that a long-term dialogue can be initiated.
