Objectives

The primary aim of the project was to increase the visibility of women with disabilities. Many organisations and communities are concerned with either the situation of women, or work with people with disabilities, but our target group is very underrepresented in society, in the media and on social media platforms - we wanted to change this through the project activities. Women with disabilities are in a specific situation, but there are very few opportunities to present their stories and perspectives, and therefore the majority of society does not have access to information about them, so their isolation is significant. Our aim was also to facilitate the flow of information between young women with (differing) disabilities, and also between them and the majority of the society. We encouraged them to share personal stories, and thus to promote understanding, acceptance, and connection. We also aimed to enable them to articulate their needs, build community and thus strengthen their advocacy skills. In addition, the project also aimed to provide visual arts (mainly photography) tools for target group members to share their stories and perspectives with the public. We also wanted to provide an opportunity to do this by organising a photo exhibition open for 1 month and to generate a dialogue around the themes raised by the works and the artists. In doing this, it was important for us to allow people who had not previously taken photographs to show up as creators (workshops were organised for that) and to involve the wider public and professionals working on disability issues (events were organised for that end). Finally, we also aimed to reach the general public through social media (youtube, facebook) and to promote personal and institutional networking.
