Objectives

The project aspired to change the perspective on the crisis, in particular linked with the food system, and see it as an opportunity to re-imagine the future by taking individual and collective responsibility, starting with teachers and students, for sustainable growth and inclusive society. ESCAPE project aimed at providing high school teachers and trainers with an innovative, more effective tool to teach climate change and raise awareness on the environmental impact of daily approach to food consumption based on the methodology of Escape games, adding the emotional dimension to the learning experience of teachers/training and providing them the elements to recreate it in classes year after year.

Background

Although the scientific community is sharing figures on the present and potential impacts of climate change and policy makers are more and more committed to tackling the crisis, the discourse on climate change still lacks the dimension of personal experience of the problem. To raise awareness also about the role and impact of personal behaviour in tackling the crisis is thus becoming more and more urgent. According to what is promoted by the GCCA+ initiative, it is necessary to act on the side of education, smartly and innovatively in order to integrate CC into national development strategies. Having identified education as a key driver towards change and students as effective agents of change in societies, ESCAPE was focused on improving the profiles of target teachers with theoretical and practical skills in environmental education to develop awareness, social and personal empowerment, through replicable teaching tools in social and environmental education. While implementing the project the partnership has recognized that the activities carried met the actual needs identified by the target group, the high school teachers and VET trainers.
