The goal was to provide students with the skills, attitudes and knowledge they need to promote harmonious coexistence in a diverse society. In addition to an intercultural experience that shapes individual lives, the students were to take on the role of ambassadors for these values and thus also positively influence their environment in Germany and Italy or make what they had learned accessible to a larger target group through the media.
The Gymnasium Oldenfelde puts great emphasis on diversity and social engagement. This can be seen on the one hand at the level of extracurricular activities, such as the society club, the diversity AG and the activities organized by these groups, and on the other hand at the very individual level. We have a very heterogeneous student body that is growing into a cosmopolitan, helpful community. Here, the older ones help the younger ones, the strong help the weak, and the children who have lived here for generations integrate those whose families have just arrived in Hamburg. The project carried out was particularly suitable for our student body, as it fits in with the values and lived culture of the school. Grade 10 students are at an age where they are already more competent in reflecting on social and political issues. They can meaningfully represent themselves and their country in a cultural exchange and engage with new things. In the lessons of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd foreign language they have acquired communication strategies and intercultural competences that could now be applied.
