Objectives

What’s the relationship between traditional food (and culture at large) and environmental sustainability? As traditional meals often have ingredients that have a high impact on the environment (like meat and dairy products), should we give up our traditions or there is a possibility to keep together culture and sustainability? Is traditional cuisine discriminatory, as the number of vegetarian and vegan people are rising? As sustainable food habits and inclusion are core values at Kora, we decided to investigate more on these questions, and prepared a questionnaire for young people about it. The questionnaire triggered the interest of a lot of young people and was filled out by 92 people from different European countries. Thanks to this investigation we realised which are the core issues regarding the relationship between environmental sustainability and culture/traditions, and we have been able to identify the needs of young European people. The project was then built around those needs, involving young people in identifying objectives and brainstorming about possible activities to implement. The general objective of the project is the following: Rethink the concept of culture, especially when it comes to food traditions, by including environmental sustainability matters. Specific objectives of the project is the following: 1. Provide participants with knowledge about food choices and their impact on environment; 2. Share and increase awareness about national/regional traditions of participating countries; 3. Investigate the concept of cultural identity and its connection to food traditions; 4. Promote the introduction of environmental sustainability in traditional recipes and meals; 5. Provide practical cooking skills to participants; 6. Raise awareness on differences and similarities of participating countries’ cultures and traditions; 7. Provide tools for European young people to reduce their impact on the environment through food choices. From the youth worker perspective, the project is in line with the Erasmus+ priorities and especially with the objectives of the Youth Exchange mobilities, as: - Engages young people in non-formal learning activities; - Empowers young people and provides them with tools to be more active citizens, especially in the topic of environmental actions and inclusive mindset; - Provides young people with practical competences that can be spent in their personal and professional life; - Promotes intercultural dialogue among young people and boosts the feeling of being European, by allowing them to be active part of a multicultural experience; - Provides the opportunity to work on personal skills and attitudes in a safe environment; - Breaks down prejudices and stereotypes, promoting European values thanks to non-formal and informal activities - Raises awareness on socially relevant topics and stimulates active participation in society; - Is “learner centred”, meaning that the main focus is on the learning process of the participants involved; - Promotes environmental sustainability at different levels (practical, for individual actions, and theoretical, to spread the word and raise awareness); - Promotes inclusion and focus on the value of multiculturality; - Promotes the use of digital tools, especially in the dissemination phase of the project.
