In the theme of identity, gender is a critical and delicate issue in the growth path of young people. Sooner or later, a young person faces this aspect of life, and often this path can be painful or conflictual due to a problematic relationship with oneself or to discrimination or violence. Every society and culture favours building expectations and predetermined gender models or ways of self-expression that can be hard to satisfy, if not structurally inequitable and oppressive. The standards that we constantly learn in the family, society, and social media tend to influence our perception of ourselves and others to the point of risking producing sometimes, even if unintentionally, prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour towards others. The project, therefore, aims to overlook the issue of gender identity not only in terms of personal development and growth of young participants so that they can acquire tools and positive, valuable practice for their future and their growth, but also in terms of youth participation in the democratic process in local and European spaces. Through this approach and the participation of young people from five European countries profoundly different from a cultural, economic, social and political point of view, the project wishes to contribute explicitly to the strengthening of European identity and active citizenship under the general objective of the Erasmus+ program. In fact, in our opinion, gender identity deals with discovering oneself and one's personality and the acceptance of oneself and one's uniqueness. However, the issue also concerns mutual respect and acceptance through the meeting with others, whether peers or family members. A youth exchange is, therefore, a privileged context for approaching this topic in this way. Considering the delicacy and complexity of the topic, we adopt a non-formal educational approach since this is the best way to bring out from the participants themselves the aspects to be discussed and the themes to be deepened during the mobility. Therefore, we will use creative, theatrical and artistic methods, in general, to let everyone express their identity, choosing the ways that best suit them. At the same time, we will conduct the participants on a path of increasing protagonism. During the project, they will create outputs and proposals representing the reflections made and affecting the different contexts in terms of contrasting gender discrimination and free expression of gender identity. We believe that training, sharing, and collective action are the best tools to make young European citizens more aware, active, and engaging in the democratic process. In this sense, during the exchange, we will start from the intercultural comparison of the situation in the European countries, analyzing differences and similarities and then close with the sharing of some inclusive practices and concrete proposals that guarantee the protection of free expression of one's own identity. The international youth exchange experience "Let us not Gen(d)realize!" aims to achieve all these objectives, involving young people from five European countries and addressing with them the issue of gender identity and gender identity from a personal, collective and European point of view. We are sure that the interaction and encounter between people from different backgrounds can only increase the level of reflection of the project and make the days of mobility rich and engaging. The general objective of the project is, therefore, to generate an intercultural experience in which young people from different European countries can reflect on the values that embody them as Europeans, trying to create artistic means that can contribute to the establishment of an inclusive community respecting the identity and focused on the protection of rights.
