European identity and valuesDemocracy and inclusive democratic participation

Objectives

To expand schoolchildren's knowledge of European history and culture, to form a conscious, responsible European citizen who can contribute to an active social and community life and who would become politically active. We wanted the project participants to understand how the European identity was formed, what problems arose, and how they were solved, so that they could understand the values that were formed, follow them and adapt them to the changes of the modern world. Citizenship education in the gymnasium emphasizes national values, so students needed to realize that they are citizens not only of Lithuania but also of Europe and are responsible for preserving and nurturing of Western European values.

Background

The project focused on increasing awareness of European history, values, and culture. Citizenship education in the gymnasium emphasizes national values, and an understanding of Western European values and global perspectives are lacking. Therefore, while implementing this project, we broadened our horizons by getting to know a country where the principles of democratic functioning have been operating for centuries.
