Objectives

There is a shocking statistic about preventable mortality. It is defined as causes of death that can be mainly avoided through effective public health and primary prevention interventions (i.e., before the onset of diseases or injuries, to reduce incidence). Based on Eurostat data [1], two-thirds of deaths under 75 could have been avoided. Looking closer to countries of partner organisations, we can see that the leaders are Romania and Lithuania with more than 300 preventable deaths for 100 000 people. Accordingly, Estonia has almost 250, Greece almost 150 and at the bottom of the list is Italy with a bit more than 100 preventable deaths per 100 000 inhabitants. Because of these huge differences, it was very interesting to have discussions between citizens of different countries about their views on a healthy lifestyle. The leading causes of premature death were ischaemic heart disease, lung cancer, alcohol-related disorders and poisonings, cerebrovascular diseases, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. There is a huge opportunity cost that a lot of people pay for not following a healthy lifestyle. It’s not only because of dying younger, it is also about having poor life quality as it correlates with healthy life years statistics. There are lots of myths and different opinions about a healthy lifestyle. We analysed the root causes of the diseases and what could prevent them and that was possible because we had a medical doctor in our team who is very passionate about preventative medicine. Through this project we addressed these issues and needs: - Health problems and unhealthy habits - Lack of awareness about lifestyle factors - Lack of understanding about food and nutrition - Lack of stress management skills, the lack of free time to think and have some peace - Poor knowledge about ourselves. - Barriers between cultures egocentricity, prejudices and stereotypes - Achieve better mental wellbeing and end stigmatization of mental health issues These were the objectives of our project: PREVENT DISEASES AND PROMOTE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE - raise awareness about the importance of lifestyle and everyday choices to preserve and improve health. Introduce young people to healthy habits (e.g. diet, physical activity, mental hygiene) and practice them together so that they could continue to do it on their own after the project. TEACH YOUNGSTERS CRITICAL THINKING - To question what traditions are important to keep and which ones should be changed because of the negative impact on ourselves that is shown by new scientific evidence. And to question if there are some new habits to be implied because of the positive influence on ourselves. EMPOWER TO TAKE AN ACTION - by increasing the sense of inclusiveness and giving them the skills and tools to take actions on a small and large scale - to take care of themselves and help others. To inspire youth to take a part in active involvement in social, economic, and cultural life. TO PROMOTE CULTURAL LEARNING - Cultural learning increases solidarity, understanding and tolerance. During the project participants from different countries and backgrounds interacted working together, comparing their differences and similarities. Therefore, they broadened their understanding of the surrounding world and themselves, as well as, learned that everyone can teach us something.
