Objectives

The purpose of this project was more culturally sensitive and inclusive representation of ethnic and social minorities. The idea was to gather youth workers form 5 partner organizations working with different social and ethinc minorities for a training course in which participants would learn and share experiences concerning ethical and non-discriminatory representations of different groups in advocacy work. The objectives of the project were: (1) to share theoretical and practical knowledge between partners, (2) to share anthropological methods, (3) empower youth workers to solve problems further in their work. Youth workers who work with different cultural and social minorities inevitably have to represent the groups they are working with in different situations, for example fundraising campaigns, advocacy campaigns. Representing and talking about cultural and/or social “other” can be challenging and without particular consideration can reproduce stereotypes and conventional discourses rather than create more understanding. If we want to be conscious about the representations that we are creating while working with different social and cultural groups, it is crucial to have broad understand of contexts and issues. Therefore during our 5 day training program we addressed historical contexts and issues met in representations of cultural and social “other” - the power relationships and inequality created through representations; decolonisation of aid and charity work; different aspects of discriminations in representations (gender, body, race, ethnicity, age, ability, etc.).
