Objectives

By implementing the project we wanted to increase capacity of youth workers/educators/ parents to interact and feel more confident using methodology, educational videos combined with interpersonal principles for youth inclusion and increased quality of open work with youth with mental health disorders. We wanted the gap that youth workers had to disappear, there was a need to prepare guidlines for them to use while working with young people. They needed knowledge, skills and material for discussions and meetings on the mental well-being topic. The main objective was to create open work competence and interpersonal skills improvement methodology, which is a great help now. The least but not the last, is the institutional network, which now runs at its full. Network lead to the result, that our center has employees from two other institutions on cooperation bases, one of them is sexuality educator from health centre and the other was NEETs advisor from NGO. Also we have very close constant cooperation with employment agency and its department Karjeras, gymnasiums and other educational institutions, recruitment agency, hospital and other organisations. But the most important is the trust from young people.

Background

The application was made after the challenges faced trying to improve the service quality of the open youth canter activity. The first difficulties appeared explaining youth workers the aspect of open work with youth, as there are no qualified programes for youth workers and the requirement to apply to youth worker positions are not high, except for one worker in a team. The second issue was to help youth workers to reach the youth having less opportunities, to get their trust, to find out problems young people face, to guide them to problem solution. The last but not the least, was the matter of activities, youth workers had little understanding of methodology to work with teenagers and young adults, they had little understanding , of psychological characteristics, preferences, subtleties of maturation, mental health characteristics, and behaviour of their visitors'. Project activities have addressed all the issues mentioned above. Youth workers had a chance to work in teams with specialists (social workers, psychologists, NGO workers, education and health institution leaders and others) to discuss the youth work subtleties from all the possible angles, which created a full range picture of the problems young people deal with.
