Background

Our school, Lodewijkcollege in Terneuzen is part of an organization called Stichting VO Zeeuws-Vlaanderen which governs three schools for secondary education. The project Democracy: past and present concerned 29 pupils of the fifth form vwo in our bilingual department. The project was developed in cooperation with the Internationales Gymnasium Meerane (Sachsen- Germany). Due to Covid-19 it took a long time before the physical exchange (i.e. our trip to Germany!) could be finally organized in May 2022 (and the German students visited Terneuzen in June 2022). In the meantime the students followed lessons about the theme Democracy, cultural diversity en co-created a digital magazine. The process could be followed on TwinSpace. Lodewijkcollege got a National Label for this presentation! During the exchanges in Germany and the Netherlands the students cooperated on the theme, visited WO II monuments, WOII museums, a former concentration camp in Belgium and the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. All these visits were part of the project in which the students investigated democracy and the democratic process from WO II onwards.
