Product labels carry a great deal of information that influences the consumer's decision to purchase the product. For the modern consumer, the labelling of food, household chemicals, or care products is a basic source of knowledge about the product and the way it is used, and later segregated. Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 October 2011 on the provision of food information to consumers aims to provide consumers with reliable information on products and packaging. Producers are complying with the new market requirements by placing many of the necessary markings on packaging, however, observing our surroundings, we noticed that not every consumer is aware of the importance of individual icons and their impact on the environment and consumption. According to Agnieszka M. Barwicka's study "Świadomość konsumencka młodzieży" published in 2018, there is a belief in public opinion that young people are not aware of their consumer decisions and make purchase decisions under the influence of emotions and advertising, without paying attention to labelling. Together with our partners, we attempted to investigate this problem by organising a quiz testing knowledge of the following labels: green dot, three arrow symbol, tidyman symbol, PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, Glass recycling symbol, aluminium, SIGRE, 3 R's symbol. Among the 100 people surveyed, only 20% of the respondents knew the answer to ⅓ of the symbols given. We wanted to delve deeper into the subject and started asking people in their homes and schools if they were familiar with the symbols on products and if, after identifying them, they knew where to throw away the bottle or the product label. It turned out that most people do it on impulse, intuitively, because they do not know the meaning of the labels. After the analysis together with our partners we came to the conclusion that in our countries labelling is used on retail products, but the lack of knowledge about basic labelling can have a dramatic impact on the environment in our surroundings. Poor waste segregation can, in the long run, increase the cost of waste disposal and does not contribute to waste reduction. Therefore, we decided to carry out a youth exchange during which we will learn what labels are on products in our countries and plan how to spread knowledge about sustainable packaging and conscious waste management in our households. The aims of the project are: -To increase knowledge of the meaning of the markings on packaging and labels: green dot, three arrow symbol, tidyman symbol, PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, Glass recycling symbol, aluminium, SIGRE, 3 R's symbol. -By learning the exact meaning of the symbol, gaining the ability to interpret the impact of the use of particular packaging on the environment. Gain knowledge of how packaging is produced and be able to distinguish between good and bad packaging and products. -To gain knowledge about the impact of natural resources on the production of individual packaging, to shape responsibility for purchasing decisions and to reduce the purchase of products with plastic packaging among young people and local communities. To increase knowledge, skills and awareness of rational purchasing and waste management thanks to the applied method of experience exchange among participants. -Development of soft competences: solving international environmental problems, team cooperation, learning to learn, interpersonal communication, searching for sources of information, using them. -Nurturing intercultural values: openness, acceptance, tolerance through work in teams. -Implementation of a social campaign "Buy smart, waste smart" in Poland, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Greece, Spain and Germany to raise awareness locally, nationally and internationally on the origin and production process of packaging, which will contribute to the proper segregation of waste and reduce the purchase of plastic products that have a negative impact on the environment.
