The project aimed to develop a specialized vocational education and training (VET) program focused on sustainable food aid delivery. Our main goals were to: - Enhance the competencies of staff and volunteers involved in food aid programs, - Improve green skills to boost employability and sustainable practices, - Provide innovative pedagogical methods and best practice guidelines, - Create a comprehensive training curriculum and digital learning platform, - Strengthen the capacities of NGOs and food aid providers, while supporting country-specific food policies.
We applied for the SUST-AID project in response to the growing and urgent challenge of food insecurity, which was further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Alarmingly, chronic hunger affected approximately 820 million people globally, with 113 million facing acute food insecurity. In Europe, the prevalence of food insecurity increased from 9.4% in 2007 to 12.2% in 2011, with particularly high rates in Eastern Europe, Cyprus, and Greece. The situation worsened during the pandemic, with European Food Banks reporting up to a 50% increase in emergency food assistance demands. Through SUST-AID, we sought to actively contribute to strengthening the capacities of organizations involved in food aid and to support vulnerable communities, aligning our efforts with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the commitment to "leave no one behind".
