Through this project, the partners organizations wanted to promote empathy as a key factor for building inclusive and healthy relationships & behaviors among youngsters. Before starting this project, the partners identified a range of specific needs among the groups that Filologisme and partners were engaged with. As working with vulnerable groups (children in foster care, youngsters with few opportunities & minority social groups as Roma or youngsters with disabilities), the partners noticed certain behavioral patterns that underlie a form of low empathy among the mixt groups in which these youngsters with a certain disadvantaged background live. After conducting a needs analysis in the partner organizations, we found out that most of the respondents indicated a strong desire to empathize with what is happening around them, but in most of the cases they are not very aware of the emotions, moods, or the problems of those around them. Therefore, our main goal was to raise the level of awareness of the participants in the project regarding other people's feelings, but also their own perception of themselves and the desire to help others. To accomplish this main goal, we run this YE for 23 youngsters aged 14-18 from three countries (Romania, Latvia, Croatia), in Adunatii-Copaceni county, Romania, by using a NFL based methodology that places poetry in a central role. Unfortunately, before the start of the YE our four partner from Slovenia withdrew from the project after the identification of a Covid situation among their group, therefore the project was implemented with the rest of three participating countries, but with the same number of youngsters as the places were redistributed among the other partners. As we have observed from our practices with the youngsters, ‘consuming’ poetry can lead to a high level of awareness of other people's emotions and a sustainable environment. Thus, we created an enriching learning space, enabling the participants to have a deeper understanding of what empathy means. The methodology was varied and covered emotional literacy, group awareness, performance, research, role-playing, trust building, etc. The objectives of this project were: - Increase the level of awareness for 90% of the participants regarding the importance of empathy to build a healthy behavior, by working on their emotional literacy during the YE. Measured with an awareness questionnaire by the end of YE. - Deepen the level of understanding for 75% of the participants regarding how empathy works in building an inclusive environment, by accepting diversity and multiculturalism in society. Measured with The Empathy Quotient by the end of YE. - Higher motivation to read literature, especially poetry, for 50% of the participants in the YE by the end of project implementation. Measured with an individual reading plan submitted by the end of implementation.
