Objectives

Starting off with one of the biggest issues in our contemporary lives, that takes a large part of the daily agenda in our society, we aimed to raise awareness on topics such as sustainable development, environmental issues and climate change. Environmental issues affect our day to day lives, and youngsters have the right to know as much as possible about problems that will affect the future if we, as communities, do not act: global warming, rising sea level, increasing air pollution, increasing amount of waste in the oceans, deforestation. Therefore, we succeeded in offering suitable materials for the young participants to comprehend the issues that affect us globally, but also and more focused on the European and local level. The participating NGOs, having as one of the organizational objectives environmental protection and sustainable development, gathered 30 young people (ages 16 to 30) from Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Italy, Portugal and Greece that were prepared in advance for this youth exchange and that have passion for this topic. Therefore, the participants mainly learned about the importance of sustainable development and the need to protect the environment, but also tackling more specific subjects related to the main two. Through practical activities, including an exercise of continuous recycling during the whole youth exchange, the participants learned about suitable and effective ways of reducing the amount of trash we produce and the importance of waste management and recycling. On this note, we also successfully implemented a cleanup activity to clean the litter that has accumulated, participants learning how social capital can be used to improve the quality of the surrounding environment. Other activities through which participants were able to develop green skills tackled issues such as urban regeneration, renewable energy, zero waste movement, sustainable housing, as they were able to have the know-how regarding saving resources and reducing pollution in their local communities. The intercultural exchange also contributed to sharing perspectives, issues and good practices that can be used both as a way of raising awareness in other countries about real environmental problems and to apply and promote the best practices in their local communities. The objectives that we set were achieved through this project, as we: 1. Enhanced the knowledge of the 30 participants and successfully raised awareness on sustainable lifestyle and mindset through the exchange of information, knowledge and best practices on ways to protect the environment and to contribute to sustainability in participating countries and at EU level 2. Empowered the 30 participants to lead a more sustainable lifestyle and become more responsible with the environment (reduce waste production, recycle, use eco-friendly means of transportation etc.) by exchanging best practices and creating new ideas on reducing the impact of human activities on the environment through mobility activities; (O2) 3. Engaged the 30 participants to become more active citizens in their communities, take action and influence those around them to become more aware and responsible regarding environmental issues and lead a more sustainable lifestyle by sharing project results with them, organising or joining local events and causes, using ideas developed during the project on reducing the impact of human activities on the environment. (O3) The project therefore promoted EU values, youth initiatives and the Erasmus+ Programme, connecting youth from different European countries and focusing on environmental issues. All the objectives of the project are aligned with Erasmus+ objectives and priorities and specific aims of mobility projects for young people. In accordance, through this project the participants developed the level of key competences, skills and attitudes, such as combating climate change, clean energy, environmental issues; we empowered the participants to become active citizens, to further raise awareness about socially relevant topics, to promote intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and solidarity; we strengthened links between the youth field and European values; we fostered quality improvements in youth work, in particular through enhanced cooperation between organisations in the youth field; we supported and facilitated transnational and international cooperation between organisations in the fields of education, training, empowering youth with more key competences for their personal and professional development, recognising competences acquired through formal, informal and non-formal learning; we enhanced the international dimension of youth activities and enhanced the capacity of youth workers and organisations in their support for young people in complementarity with the European Union's external action.
