Objectives

Develop a methodology for documentary filmmaking with young people: with the aim of developing and disseminating a comprehensive methodology that will enable youth workers to gain in-depth knowledge of the use of documentary film as a tool for effective engagement with young people. Develop a methodology that covers both the non-formal learning process and the more in-depth aspects of the documentary filmmaking process, thus providing a handbook with both theoretical and practical content. Direct involvement of young people: Active involvement of young people in the whole process of documentary filmmaking throughout the duration of the project, encouraging their empowerment and involvement in meaningful storytelling. Testing our methodology with young people in two different countries with two different working approaches (the workshops carried out in Spain were more compressed in time than the workshops in Slovenia) gave us valuable feedback for the development of the methodology. Disseminate the positive effects of intersectoral cooperation: Disseminate the positive effects of intersectoral cooperation and facilitate their contribution to fostering solidarity between different communities.

Background

We applied for this project because of the need to showcase documentary film as a powerful tool for young people to make their voices heard on issues that affect them. The project aims, in particular, to empower the advocacy voice of young people through the medium of documentary film. During the development of the project idea, we realised that there was a lack of comprehensive methodologies for using documentary film as a tool in working with young people. The needs addressed included the identification of non-formal learning, technical aspects of film production and artistic expression. The process of documentary filmmaking was seen as a very innovative tool that can be used in youth work, as it encourages critical thinking, storytelling and artistic expression. Our motivation was to empower youth workers with knowledge and tools on the technical aspects of filmmaking, nurturing creative environments and building collaboration between the cultural and youth sectors. Through the project we developed innovative and inclusive approaches and addressed the needs of young people, especially those with fewer opportunities.
