Democracy and inclusive democratic participationReaching the policy level/dialogue with decision makers

Objectives

The most distinctive feature of democracy is that it enables members of the society to make choices and to be effective on political power and functioning through political participation. Although there is no general definition of the concept of political participation, it can be explained as “activities designed by civilian citizens to influence the decisions and practices of the state at various levels”. Individuals can become active citizens by participating in decision-making mechanisms in various ways such as voting, participating in non-governmental organizations, volunteering, protesting, paying taxes and using social media. With political participation and active citizenship being such an important concept, when we look at the world in general, especially young people who will shape the future see participation in decision-making mechanisms as just voting and are not interested in political and social events. The development of technology and the increase in the use of the internet are other factors that distract young people from active citizenship. In Europe, which represents the largest cluster of democracies in the world, especially in the last ten years, the concept of democratic deficit and Euroscepticism, and the complexity of the Union's institutional functioning are increasingly turning European youth away from political participation (Bahar Hurmi, European Union in a Globalizing World). According to Eurostat data, although the voting rate of citizens was over 50% in the last Parliamentary elections in 2019, the voting rate of young people It is below 30%. When we look at our country, Turkey, young people see participation in decision-making mechanisms only as voting or as a topic of conversation in their daily lives. According to the "well-being of young people" report published by Habitat Association, although the voting rate of young people is high, they stay away from political and social life. In order to increase the participation of young people in decision-making mechanisms, their sensitivity to social problems and their active citizenship, the importance given to civil society has increased in recent years, and the awareness of young people has been tried to be increased through media literacy. European Union with various agreements and reports; The European Commission is trying to increase the active citizenship of the youth of the union by including the topic of political participation in the priorities of the Erasmus+ program and the Youth Strategy objectives. However, young people in Europe and in the status of candidate countries for the European Union should learn the EU structure in the best way and become active citizens who are more sensitive to social problems by participating in decision-making mechanisms. Our project aimed to respond to these needs and contribute to the learning of participants by experiencing political participation and the European Union. While doing this, the participants put their activities on a more concrete basis by discussing the issue of migration and refugees, which is one of the most popular issues in Europe according to Eurobaromoter data. In the light of all these, our general goal was determined as encouraging active citizenship by increasing the participation of young people in political life and decision-making mechanisms, in line with the goals of Erasmus+ and youth exchanges to participate in democratic life and to connect the European Union to young people. Our special goals were determined as; 1. To increase the motivation of young people by raising awareness of the importance of participation in political life and active citizenship 2. To make young people understand the decision-making processes, EU structure and functioning in the EU. 3. To show young people that they can find solutions to social problems by participating in political life and decision-making processes. 4. To increase the competence of young people on migration and refugees, which concerns the whole of Europe
