Objectives

The aim of the project was to get to know _ different systems _ in german speaking countries in Europe that deal with education for special needs, especially in the area of language, speaking and communication, but also to get to know regularschools _ and their pedagogical support for students. _ what are the framework conditions to support and teach students with and without disabilities according to their needs and resources? Can aspects of this work also be implemented at our school under other (Austrian) framework conditions? The look at different solutions against the background of inclusive as well as segregating _ measures in the respective school system was the central moment of our interest. In addition, there were also questions about subject-specific materials in the area of speech therapy/ special education diagnosis and support measures, as well as teachers training and further education which we wanted to discuss at the partner institutions. All inputs that we received at the partner institutions should be further processed as best as possible in our school development.

Background

The „Wiener Sprachheilschule“ has been offering speech therapy, to support pupils with impairments in the areas of language, speaking and communication, for a very long time as an important part of the Viennese education sector. Due to the desired changes in the educational sector towards successful inclusion it is necessary to look closely at existing structures and possibly rethink and redesign them. In order to create equal opportunities for all students, the education sector and also our school must support and foster students with speech impairments appropriately regardless of their socio-economic background. The goal of this project was to get insight into different European educational systems with the aim to develop new perspectives and visions as part of our schools’ developmental process and to possibly implement them at the “Wiener Sprachheilschule”. The different approaches to inclusion and segregation in the European partner institutions we visited as well as an exchange with local educators should reinspire our work.
