Objectives

The teacher's personal goal was to expand her professional skills in the fields of art, culture, design and architecture and creative innovative teaching design through job shadowing in a Finnish school. The idea was to use artistic means and methods of cultural mediation to gain insight into the school system, school operations and everyday school life in Finland, to establish personal contacts with teachers, school management, student representatives and others relevant to school operations in and around school. The results of the teacher’s visit were to be presented to and discussed with the teaching staff as well as with parents' and students’ representatives in school conferences. At an institutional level the job shadowing activity helped the Austrian school, BG Mödling Bachgasse to get new international contacts and learn more about the Finnish school as a potential project partner for follow-up projects and possible further cooperation. The midterm goal is to initiate the EU accreditation process of BG Mödling Bachgasse and the promotion of the internationalization of the school.

Background

Bundesgymnasium Mödling Bachgasse, an Austrian secondary school sent one of its teacher staff members, arts and crafts teacher Claudia Kragulj, to a one-month job shadowing to Otaniemi lukio, an upper secondary education school in Espoo, Finland. She observed everyday school life and fellow teachers of various subjects and courses, especially in art and creative classes focusing on pedagogical and didactical methods, art education classes and their specific content, spatial concepts in school, ways of dealing with gender issues and diversity in the classes and ways of working interdisciplinarily at school. BG Mödling Bachgasse was interested in training its teachers and in getting international contacts for eventual larger follow-up cooperations.
