With this project, we wanted to bring other European countries and cultures closer to young people with few opportunities, in order to reduce the current skepticism and mistrust towards the European Union. This skepticism and mistrust of the young people arises from the lack of experience, which in turn leads to thinking in stereotypes. Furthermore, due to the lack of education, there is a distance to the abstract organization of the European Union. It seems too far away for the young people and not as a network in which people are working for their well-being. Young people feel excluded, have little understanding of democratic processes and see no need to vote or participate in these issues. As a result, they are unaware of their responsibility and ability to help shape our society as part of their (European) citizenship. This mindset gives young people the feeling that they cannot control their lives. To some extent, they believe that all important decisions in their lives are made by others and that they themselves have no influence on them. This often leads to dissatisfaction with society, politics, freedom, life choices, and democracy. Young people become isolated, with negative consequences of depression and other health problems, extremism and growing intolerance. This project aims to enable young people with few opportunities to discover European cultures in a new way & further to participate in activities around the European Capital of Culture. Over all it should give them an deeper understanding that the European Uninon is a great chance for them to participate and cocreate our (and so also their) future together by taking responsibility as empored citizens.
