We wanted to support organisations, to be able to reach and include more young people from marginalized groups in their practices and strategic planning. In order for organisations to be able to implement this objective, we wanted to create learning opportunities and tools, e.g a self-assessment for the organisation, as well as methods and workshops for staff and volunteers. To implement this, we have created a certification scheme in which organisations must take various steps to become more inclusive. This way we want organisations to become more inclusive to marginalized young people, by becoming aware of the topic and by empowering them, to include (more) marginalized young people within their organizational practices and structures. This way organisations can take one step forward to a more inclusive work practice and environment. e.g. by being able to plan inclusive activities, inclusive websites and marketing strategies, creating safer spaces etc. This way, marginalized groups feel more addressed, welcome and safe. Within this project we also have started to establish national networks of inclusive organisations, to exchange good practices and resources. Furthermore, we also promoted equality and non-discrimination.
Young people are facing many challenges and are left behind frequently. E.g. they are less likely to be involved in governance and decision-making processes and therefore they are facing economic, political and procedural barriers. Furthermore, young people are facing systematic discrimination and oppression (e.g. in school, work, on the streets etc.) and are exposed to stereotypes and prejudice. Especially young people who feel/are part of a marginalized group are exposed to these conditions. Therefore, young people from marginalized groups need opportunities, need a voice, need possibilities of participation. At the same time youth organisations are trying to involve young people and their needs but sometimes lack the knowledge and tools to do so.
