Objectives

The organizing team considered outdoor education a crucial tool and opportunity for youth workers to contribute to the mental and physical well-being of young people. The project "Back to the Roots" was a one-stage training course for youth workers, concentrating on outdoor and nature education. Its focus was on raising awareness of the physical health benefits and the importance of spending time in nature for mental health among youngsters, using non-formal education methods. The project aimed to inspire youth workers to foster a connection with nature in their youth work. The training course took place in the midst of nature, on a campsite in Manglisi, Georgia, surrounded by beautiful mountains, providing participants with the chance to relax and concentrate on nature, themselves, and each other—back to the roots. Each organization's representatives had the opportunity to experience an innovative methodology with the higher goal of preparing participants to support and motivate local youngsters using knowledge and tools acquired from the training. The pandemic significantly affected young people and their support systems, making health a major concern. In times of confinement, there was a high demand for outdoor activities and a necessity to focus on health among the target groups of the involved organizations. Young people faced increased stress, anxiety, lack of motivation, obesity, insufficient physical activity, and screen addictions. The partners observed similar trends among their youth workers and the young people they engaged with, recognizing nature-based and outdoor education as beneficial assets for their youth work. This project aimed to equip youth workers with outdoor education methods to enhance mental and physical health. The project addressed identified needs in various ways: - Providing partner organizations with nature and outdoor-based tools and methods through the training and experience-based learning of youth workers, focusing on developing competences, skills, and talents applicable in their daily professional missions in youth work. - Creating a learning environment for participants to develop an active healthy lifestyle, mental and physical self-care, and integrating these practices into their everyday lives. This approach aimed at facilitating the transfer of these insights to the youngsters they work with more effectively. - Establishing intercultural exchange opportunities on topics such as mental health, forest bathing, and the use of nature-based methods, with the aim of sharing insights, experiences, and best practices that can be applied to the local situations and contexts of different partner organizations. - Addressing sustainability concerns by providing outdoor recreational methods with low ecological impact and raising awareness about sustainability and green topics through these activities. The main contribution to the development of youth work was in highlighting and introducing nature-based practices, and specifically forest bathing, as tools for addressing modern challenges in working with youth.
