Objectives

We had several objectives before starting the project. First one was to give the opportunity to 5 youngsters, 10 in total, to discover several countries in the European Union on their terms. The idea was to experience the beauty of our continent in all its diversity and the possibilities to travel several countries without using a plane or car. So, there was also an environmental and sustainability objective in this journey. For this opportunity we chose youngster who had fewer financial opportunities to undertake this kind of journeys, due to the high cost of undertaking such adventure without support. On other hand we gave the youngsters the chance to take action in this adventure. The objective was to give youngsters all the tools they needed to organise this adventure with the minimal help of youth workers and take action during the journey as well. In this case we wanted to cultivate self-reliance and empower them to take matter in their own hand. Giving youngsters the opportunity to organise everything on their own and if needed to help them when they got stuck or they had questions. During the two journeys we tried to implement the method of experiential learning. By using this method, we took the participants out of their comfort zone to enhance learning experience. It also helped to have shared experiences to create deeper connection and build on a more solid group feeling. The adventures created situations where the stronger helped the once that had troubles or fears, and the youngsters had to build on each other for support. In these challenging experiences the inclusion of the whole group was important, and the diversity of their being was the strength to get through it together. Another strong objective was to have a distance from their day to day lives to have some clarity on their situation but also create a space to breath and just be themself without the weight of life’s problems put on them. In some moments they shared their troubles, their dreams, their frustrations, their trauma’s, ... Most of the times they started sharing out of their own intend. It was a safe space to feel and to heal. I remember a particular moment when I was sitting on the beach in Croatia with one of the girls and my colleague and she told us it had been years since she had peace and she could feel like herself, but in this moment she was truly happy and calm. She told us how angry and sad she can get at home because of all the things she has to endure. Taking care of her little brothers and sisters, dealing with her mom that can be verbally aggressive and says really mean stuff to her, getting by at school, dealing with social exclusion and anxiety, depression, financial struggles, ... Her gratitude for this little break in her struggling life was huge. She came to different activities the months after and kept expressing what an impact this trip had on her. She felt a lot more sociable and was less scared of talking to people or asking them for help. She had been working for months in a childcare facility and was very proud of how good it was going. She came to our 10year anniversary with her sister and tried to convince her to come to Ajko for overcoming her social anxiety. She even brought us together for a group picture with our whole team because she wanted a memory with the Ajko team to last.
