Objectives

Our goals can be divided into three groups, structured according to the function of their participants, as follows: teachers who are participants in the course; teachers who don’t participate in the course and students. Some of our main aims for all teachers are to gain skills for improving the communication between students, upbringing the mutual respect and overcoming the differences in the classroom. One of the main points of interest for us is the familiarization with the human rights topic and the process of teaching the students about accepting the differences between all people. Among the goals for our students are to be more tolerant, understanding and responsible for their actions and how their behavior affects the mental health of others. Students need to be aware of what others are feeling and how to treat their classmates. Respect and tolerance should be taught.

Background

121 SU “Georgi Izmirliev”, Sofia is a school that has students from preschool to 12th grade (high school). Besides primary and secondary education, the school offers the future high schoolers different programs to choose from: Software and Hardware Sciences with advanced English study and a second language (Spanish or Russian); Software and Hardware Sciences with advanced Spanish study and a second language (English or Russian); and Entrepreneurial program with advanced English study and a second language (Spanish or Russian). Each of those programs is appropriate for implementing this project because in those classes there are many ambitious students from good families as well as children with different interests and from poorer families, which sometimes causes problems in the classroom. Because of this we applied for the project ‘Tolerance in the classroom’. Its aim is to improve the teachers’ competence of creating a more tolerant environment towards the “different” students; to develop their pedagogical skills and to improve the general quality of education.
