Objectives

The first aspect of the project proposal is aimed at the whole teaching community of the school. Although we are somewhat limited by the existing regulations, the PTG team is always striving to update our knowledge and be more helpful to our students. This is the main reason why we want to take a closer look at typical features of the Finnish education system. Our pupils number just over 300, which makes it possible for everyone to know each other and for us as teachers to know them well. In the practical classes they are divided into small groups. The aim is to be well prepared for a more fulfilling career and better job skills. The second aspect of the project is aimed at vocational teachers , who use the Arduino robotic systems. They are a fusion of three components: hardware, software and community. To get the most out of it, we need to have basic concepts from all three components. One of the key aspects to the success of Arduino is the community that is built around it, thanks to the open nature of the hardware and software. The software, is completely open source and the hardware (schematics, board drawings, etc.) are made available. Its application is extremely large by various students.

Background

The students studying in the PTG are mostly from the city and the region and with the prospect of being able to realize themselves as good professionals after graduation. The school is increasingly adopting a model of mixed ethnic composition, which is changing the composition of the student community and necessitating a change in the school's strategy and objectives. In connection with the specific vocational orientation of the vocational fields, a higher percentage of the pupils studying at the high school are boys. In recent years, pupils with lower results from the lower secondary stage have entered have serious difficulties in learning the curriculum content. New teaching methods, new curriculum development, curricula and syllabuses, or new management, teaching and learning environments are not sufficiently implemented. Prolonged learning in an e-environment is also a key factor in underperformance. Many students only have telephones, which is a problem for completing some assignments, and families cannot provide private study spaces, which prevents students from being in a supportive environment to fully participate in e-learning.
