Key competences developmentTeaching and learning of foreign languages

Objectives

The aim of our project was to improve the language competences of our teachers. To provide them with the opportunity to build quality language habits and to give more space for the development of communication in the English language, self-presentation in a foreign environment, the acquisition of knowledge of grammatical phenomena and the eventual establishment of contacts for the creation and implementation of international projects. This is related to the subsequent expected improvement in the quality of English teaching in our school. In particular, the motivation of teachers and pupils to learn a foreign language and the benefit of creative approaches to teaching. This will reduce the level of apprehension about participating in international projects, the fear of communicating in a foreign language and the frustration of misunderstanding for both teachers and students. Improving access to international projects will be a great opportunity for students and will also ensure an increase in the credit of our school. Another great expectation from this project for our school is in the area of teaching our students. The ongoing transition from teaching German to English as the main language required new competent teachers.

Background

We are a primary school and kindergarten for the hearing impaired. Our school is attended by students with hearing impairments (deaf, hard of hearing), with speech disorders, with combined disabilities and with significant learning disabilities. These children especially require an individual approach, a slower work pace and a small team during teaching. The specifics are the teaching content of hearing-impaired children, who mainly use sign language for communication. The teaching of the Czech language takes place on the basis of the teaching of a foreign language. Part of the subject of communication skills is also the teaching of the English language, but only in reading and writing. Our school employs experienced special educators who are guarantors of high-quality teaching and learning, but also try to involve pupils as much as possible in everyday life. The Erasmus+ projects are of great help, which give our pupils an insight into the situation abroad, enable them to visit schools of the same type in foreign countries, learn in a foreign language environment and contact European peers. All of this helps them consolidate their language skills and prepares them for further study and employment on the labor market.
