There is no doubt that we live in a diverse, many-sided, multicultural world. There are more than two hundred fifty countries on the Earth, and each of them has its special, unrepeatable, unique culture. Every single person is the carrier of some culture or, more precisely, — the representative of one and only combination of cultures, because everybody has their peculiar background (our roots, migrations, conscious choice, social environment, and others are the elements that build our personality). So, culture is everywhere, it surrounds us and is a form of our being. The richness of the cultural heritage and the uniqueness of each individual’s culture is a huge asset of mankind, its pride, and its treasure. However, sometimes cultural differences might become a barrier or an obstacle to communication, rapport development, and relationship building. Misunderstanding results in unwanted consequences, such as ineffective cooperation and inability to solve difficult problems; feelings of confusion, loneliness, and disappointment; inequality, discrimination, racism, and so on. On the other hand, tolerance and acceptance lead to mutual understanding, good mental health, and feeling of satisfaction; it helps to cooperate and tackle global challenges. It is possible only when people are aware of cultural issues, when they understand their own culture and have a sincere desire to understand others. That’s what we wanted to transfer via this Youth Exchange. We carried the idea of this project for a long period of time, meanwhile investigating and exploring different cultures during our youth and social work in the frames of Erasmus+. At some point, we got an insight: despite the fact that we’re all coming from very diverse cultures, which means that we all have a unique cultural background, by this uniqueness we’re all equal – we all have something to share, something to teach, something to amuse one another with. We went further into the investigation of interculturality, which led to understanding that despite all the cultural differences and varieties that can be obviously seen on the surface, on the very deep and basic level all of our cultures are built upon the same solid basis of the main humanistic values, core moral principles and ideas. Since the “core” is contained in different cultural products, we chose four domains to discover and prove it. We believed and with the project we made it clear, that the most tangible way to understand culture is to explore language, folklore fairytales, rituals, and children’s games, in which culture is being reflected and objectified. That’s how we came up with the idea of this project. We focused on elaborating the notion of interculturality, which we understand as the similarity and uniformity of all the cultures on the basic core level despite the diversity and variety of their visible surface part. To meet our goal, we brought together youth from different countries with absolutely different historical and cultural backgrounds (to enrich the cultural diversity, we invited to participate both Program and Partner countries). We worked in the national groups (step one is to understand own culture), mixed groups (step two is to explain own culture and understand others) and ended up with the idea that we are all equal and similar in our uniqueness, and are carriers of the universal, common for all mankind culture with generally appreciated humanistic values and moral principles. We set the following objectives: - To explore the roots, patterns, and core concepts of each culture and their influence on personality and identity; - To provide methods for using language, rituals, fairytales, and games as tools to address the cultural differences, similarities and origins; - To raise self, cultural and ethnic awareness through non-formal educational methods and peer education, to reinforce understanding and interest in other cultures through intercultural learning; - To promote positive and respectful attitudes toward various cultures, people, and their specialty; - To reflect on the differences that have occurred to the cultures, norms, and values over the past years; - To promote human and European values, to share cultural values, and to promote a deeper understanding of other cultures; - To elaborate the notion of interculturality as a similarity and uniformity of all the cultures on the basic core level of humanistic values, and moral principles. Methods and basic elements used within the project to achieve our objectives: • Name and Ice-Breaking Games, Energizers, Getting-to know each other activities; Team-Building activities; • Presentations as methods to introduce the topics (interactive, kahoot); • Improvisation Theatre – practical tool for personal development and efficient approach and method in youth work; • Staging/Acting/Performing; • Role-Play Games; Storytelling; • Discussions; World café; •Simulation activities; • Feedback/Reflection methods.
