Physical and mental health, well-being

Objectives

From a young age, we are taught that we should do physical exercises in order to keep our bodies healthy, practice basic daily hygiene (shower, brush our teeth, wash our hands...), but it happens very rarely that we are taught how to maintain emotional balance and mental health in general. It’s been more than two years since the first lockdown was announced – and although restrictions may be beginning to lift, the impact of the pandemic is far from over. We all encountered the difficulties of not seeing family and friends and having to wear face masks. The COVID-19 came unexpectedly and the world was not prepared for such a pandemic. Therefore, unfortunately now we are still bearing the consequences. Particularly when we are talking about the mental health of young people, there were studies which confirm that the coronavirus pandemic is having a huge impact on our mental health. Organizations involved in this project made a survey and according to the results over two thirds of young people said that their mental health has gotten much worse, one third said that they experienced mental distress for the first time in their life during the pandemic. There were different reasons for that, particularly: lack of personal contact with loved ones, loneliness and worries about getting or spreading coronavirus, thoughts about lack of money, social exclusion. Young people expressed that they didn't get support because they didn’t think their problem was serious enough. Some didn’t go to family or friends for support for the same reason. With adequate support and timely intervention, young people experiencing mental distress may be able to bounce back as we recover from the COVID‑19 crisis. Therefore, we believe that it is very important to create a space for young people where they can share the experience they lived and go through this experience full of consciousness with all the troubles, problems, consequences and impact it had on our lives. The aim of the youth exchange was to raise awareness of the importance of mental wellbeing of young people to empower them to act and contribute against the social challenges and issues caused by the COVID pandemic. The objectives were the following: To promote mental hygiene and mental wellbeing in everyday life to exchange best practices of coping with stress to create a booklet with tools and recommendations for young people how to maintain mental wellbeing during COVID and post COVID pandemic
