Objectives

The project idea emerged after we had started cooperating with an organization from Poland, YoWo Poland. We had partnered with them in several KA1 PDAs, as well as one KA2 Strategic Partnership. The team at YoWo was extremely experienced in graphic facilitation and design, and since we had started cooperating, we wanted to create a project together to raise the skills of our organization and network in this department. By sharing experience and opinions with our other partners, we observed that youth workers from other organizations lacked knowledge about the very existence of GF methods and tools that could be used in youth work. They lacked skills in GF and also in how to use it in the most efficient way in their daily activities. Additionally, they did not feel self-confident enough and saw themselves as not talented or creative enough to implement GF methods and tools confidently in their daily work with youngsters. Together with our partners, we collected youth workers’ needs and opinions about what they lacked to become more confident and skilled in GF – or more skilled and thus more confident – to actually use GF in youth work. Through personal communication with the youth workers participating in the TC, we collected their insights on the topic of GF in their organizations and countries in the context of youth work. We discussed our ideas for our yet-to-be-created project at that time and took notes from their opinions on the topic. Along with the youth workers we asked, we believed that GF constituted a great learning support in youth work. It was a way to answer the needs of our target audience who based their learning and information acquisition process on visual input. We were also accustomed to being stimulated by visual input every day; our brains were well prepared for that and grasped information very quickly, regardless of the dominant learning style. Supporting a presentation, project, meeting, or process with visuals (such as posters, symbols, special kinds of lettering, drawings, colors, etc.) could be a great help in youth work and could make communication with the target recipients easier and more effective. Nevertheless, GF was still not so commonly used or used in an unconscious and thus not optimal way in youth work. We wanted to promote GF in youth work more broadly and make it a great support for youth workers in their daily activities. The project aimed thus at increasing youth workers’ competences and skills in GF that they could use in their daily activities with young people. In this way, the project would foster youth workers’ quality of work with young people and, thus, help them reach their goals, e.g., inclusion and youth involvement, activism, promoting European values, etc., by implementing new methodology (GF) in their daily activities. The project aimed to improve youth workers’ competences in GF and visual thinking and boost their creativity in both personal and professional life. To achieve it, the project envisaged participants to: Understand the basic principles of graphic facilitation and be able to use them in practice. Enhance visual thinking and creativity, along with the effectiveness of the creative process. Develop abilities to support education with suitable (digital) graphics. Get to know and experience hands-on methods to practice graphic facilitation and recording.
