The general objective of MECyS was to upskill non-IT staff in small companies and organisations who are increasingly affected by digitalisation and related cybersecurity and data protection issues. In this respect, the partners had to contribute their expertise in areas such as cybersecurity technology, data protection regulations as well as curriculum design, training delivery, tool development, and teacher training. MECyS also mainly aimed to overcome different barriers in training basic data protection and cybersecurity competences. It reflected the competence development necessary to safely adopt emerging user-friendly cybersecurity technologies. Another objective was to address the lack of internal clarity and responsibility regarding data protection strategies in small organisations, which increases vulnerability. Overall, MECyS developed training concepts, tools, and materials, and deliver vocational training through various formats to build sustainable cybersecurity awareness and competence.
All companies, also small non-IT-based ones, as well as other organisation are increasingly required to digitalize, which heightens their exposure to cyber risks and data protection issues. According to the OECD, SMEs typically lack comprehensive and professional cybersecurity practices. Limited budgets, insufficient technical and human resources, and a lack of awareness make them especially vulnerable to cyber threats. While SMEs previously were not primary targets, this has changed, particularly with the rise of remote work, and the currently accelerating threats due to AI based attacks. After all, small businesses and organisations increazingly realize they are also typical targets of attacks. Apart from being an easy catch themselves, they may also pose a risk as entry points to larger companies through supply chains. Cyberattacks can thus cause severe damage, making basic cybersecurity skills among employees - the "human factor" - a crucial element in protecting small businesses and organisations. MECyS wanted raise this awareness among and provide didactial approaches to tackle this task.
