Objectives

Making pupils aware of the crimes of German occupation in Greece and developing awareness for the suffering and crimes the German occupation during the Second World War has brought to many countries such as Greece is one of the main goals. The experience of young Europeans coming together at the historical places of European history can not be replaced by anything. That is why a group of Greek pupils will come to Berlin, visiting our school and a memorial for the victims of the Nazi concentration camps in Berlin together with the German group. In Greece the German pupils will visit their school and and the memorial in Distomo together. If possible they will talk with contemporary witnesses. By making collective experiences learning outcomes are more sustainble. They enable students to share their knowledge and experiences with other student. That is how they help to establish a permanent exchange project in the school.

Background

The Fritz-Karsen-Schule is a public comprehensive school offering education from grade 1 to 13 to students from all social backgrounds. As a comprehensive school pupils from all social backgrounds attend the lessons, the project focuses on the 11th graders following the school curriculum. The students are between 15 and 18 years old.The pandemia has caused many school-related problems. One of the most severe ones is the lack of exchange between students due to home schooling and the cancellation of trips. Trips and student exchanges were made almost impossible which also prevented gatherings of pupils from different European countries. By working on a common project (memorial work related to Nazi-Germany) pupils from Germany and Greece can come together and exchange their ideas and experiences. They learn about the European history together by visiting memorials of the German occupation in Greece such as the memorial for the massacre in Distomo. By coming together with pupils from Greece, attending the same workshops and visiting the same memorials together the exchange leads to a common understanding and awareness of history, war and genocide.
