Objectives

The main objective of iREFLECT was to develop an innovative, scientifically sound and field-tested set of tools for the systematic promotion of reflective competence in teacher training. Specifically, we aimed to develop a comprehensive toolkit that integrates various reflection methods, processes and communication approaches and can be used flexibly for different target groups and contexts. We wanted to create a set of cards that would offer teachers structured stimuli for reflection processes in all phases of teacher training, while at the same time being methodologically diverse and learner-centred. A central concern was to combine theoretical foundations with practical applicability, thereby contributing to the professionalisation of teacher training. In addition, we pursued the goal of making the project results available as OER in order to enable broad, free use. Multilingual availability was intended to promote dissemination in various European education systems. Another goal was multiplication through dissemination activities and training events in the network structures of the project partners.

Background

The iREFLECT project was developed to promote the systematic development of reflective competence as a fundamental key competence for professional pedagogical practice in all three phases of teacher training. Reflection forms the essential link between theoretical knowledge and practical application and is crucial for the continuous professionalisation of teachers. We identified the need for a cross-phase approach that takes into account all three phases of teacher training: university education, teaching practice and professional practice. In each of these phases, prospective and experienced teachers need structured tools for reflecting on their pedagogical practice in order to further develop their practical skills – especially in the current era of constant change. The project also responded to the need for practical, flexible reflection tools that can be used in both initial and continuing teacher training. The European dimension made it possible to include different education systems and cultures and to learn from each other. Through this learning, a toolkit was developed that takes heterogeneity into account.
