Objectives

In annual youth exchange and professional development activities, we work actively with our partners on the expansion and further development of our peace education activities in terms of content and methodology. We understand existing and currently escalating conflicts in the EU and neighboring partner countries as a mission and learning field for peace-political European youth education. Against the backdrop of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, which has been unleashed since February 2022, the continuation and further development of the "Young Activists for Peace" project series took on an unexpected urgency and had to be addressed in every activity. Specifically, a professional development activity and a youth exchange were carried out as part of the project series "Young Activists for Peace" and in addition a professional development activity on the topic of "Anti-racism sensitization in international youth work". The theme "Communicating Peace" was deliberately chosen by the "Young Activists for Peace" partner network because of the increasing radicalization in public communication and the rise of hate speech in social media in recent years. News and social media are dominated by escalating and polarizing language. Nationalist, anti-democratic and racist actors threaten social cohesion worldwide with targeted fake news. This has become increasingly clear over the past 10 years and has reached a new dimension since the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops: democracy and peace are threatened worldwide. Against this background, it was our goal to make non-violent communication and methods of peaceful conflict transformation usable as a competence for youth workers and for peace education work in international groups. Based on the concept of Nonviolent Communication (GFK, Marshall B. Rosenberg) there are ways to solve conflicts without winners and losers - no matter if in a personal environment or in warlike conflicts between groups and peoples. With the project we wanted to convey to the participants that we humans are also characterized by the ability to communicate successfully, to cooperate, to show compassion and to act in solidarity. We believe that the ability to communicate successfully is a key to greater understanding and appreciation for one another and contributes to a more peaceful society overall. It was also the overarching goal of all activities to promote social, civic, environmental and climate engagement among young adults from different EU and neighboring partner countries and to challenge racism and nationalism. Another goal was to improve the quality and impact of European youth work and non-formal education in the field of international youth volunteering. Here, we worked with the participating youth work professionals especially on the following objectives: - Methods of racism sensitization - Breaking down barriers for youth with fewer opportunities for their inclusion in our youth education programs - Promoting youth civic engagement for the Sustainable Development Goals
