"Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person" says the European Convention on Human Rights. As the Corona pandemic made painfully clear to us, the creation of security can lead to significant restrictions on freedom. We all experienced this during the Lock Downs. The question of freedom is more topical and present than ever. When may/must it be restricted for the common good, how can we regain it and how much are freedom and security worth to ourselves but also to the European Union in which we live? Based on these questions about the 5th article of the European Convention on Human Rights, the participants deal with the two terms, which are so contradictory, yet guaranteed in the same article. In the youth exchange, we examined this area of tension from different perspectives - in relation to our own reality as responsible and conscious co-creators of our society. The project dealt with the concepts of freedom and security, their scope and limits on an individual and societal level, each in a local and European context. For example, in both cities, Berlin and Vienna, there were massive protests by "Corona deniers" who marched through the streets together with right-wing extremists. The Holocaust was regularly played down and anti-Semitic and conspiracy-theoretical content was voiced. It was a particular challenge of the Youth Exchange 2022 to address these aspects of the topic, especially with regard to the history of Germany and Austria as perpetrator nations. The aim was not only to sensitise and strengthen the participants in their role as co-creators of today's Europe by developing their own attitudes and strategies for action, but also to practise action-oriented learning, to develop background knowledge on the topic and its different aspects, to recognise and use research possibilities, to work in a team/team skills, to lead a plenary (forms of presentation), to organise the leisure programme oneself, to promote social skills and to prepare and carry out a project presentation to guests at the end of the seminar.
