At a time when right-wing populists and extremists all over Europe are successfully propagating their ideologies of inequality, our project focused on a political core value that needs to be defended against this trend: on equality. 54 youngsters between the ages of 16 and 26 from Poland, Czech Republic, Spain and Germany, including youngsters with fewer opportunities, were invited to take a closer look at this core democratic value with all its facets. Participants met at „International Summer Workshop 2022: „Equality - Let’s be Different“, a seven-day international youth exchange at wannseeFORUM, Berlin. Starting from current and Europe-wide controversies about different aspects of equality (e.g. discrimination of social minorities, the rights of asylum seekers, or gender equity in times of “#MeToo”) the young adults dealt with political and social core issues of living together in today's European societies. In artistic workshops participants developed different concepts and representations of what equality is or is not, what it can or should be, and transformed these into highly original artistic projects, which were performed and presented to the public at the end of the exchange. During the project participants intensely dealt with the topic of equality as a European topic par excellence, confronted themselves with social and cultural diversity during the exchange, and gained valuable key skills. Thus, they were encouraged to act as active EU-citizens and contribute to preserving and defending Europe’s legally guaranteed, free and democratic social order, both in their home towns and elsewhere.
