Our organisation, Youth for Positive Change-Germany, was highly interested in the topics of media, social media, and their influence on young people, as well as gender, gender equity, and challenging gender stereotypes. Our members possessed extensive knowledge of social media and media in general and were well aware of the power of social media in shaping societies and setting standards and norms. The main idea behind the project was the youth exchange called 'Don't be Mean Behind the Screen', in which one member of 'Youth for Positive Change - Germany' participated. This enabled them to address the topic of gender in the media and social media during local meetings with young people and meetings with representatives of youth organizations in their network. The discussions primarily focused on how females and males were being portrayed, the issues faced by young girls and boys in today's society, and the visibility of young people who identify as non-binary in the media and social media world. It was realized that it was a topic that sparked the interest of young people but also required attention and education among young people in general. With this in mind, our members decided to pursue the idea by creating a project that could have a greater impact on local, regional, national, and potentially European levels. Together with their partners, 'Youth Council Next Generation- Skopje', they created the first draft of the application. In the initial stages, young people from Germany and North Macedonia were directly involved. They shared their thoughts on media and the social media world, expressing their concerns about the pressures felt from social media and their ideas on how media and social media should become more open in representing gender diversity. The young people expressed their concerns about the traditional portrayal of gender roles in the media and the need for updating them. The ultimate goal of the youth exchange, 'Gender through the Media Screen', was to raise the interest of young people in exploring how media and social media shape the perception of gender and gender roles, and to encourage them to question the portrayal of gender in the media and social media. The main objectives of the Youth Exchange, 'Gender through the Media Screen', were as follows: Raised understanding among the participants and participating organizations about the impact that media and social media have on young people. Equipped the participants with tools for analyzing media messages. Increased the participants' knowledge in the field of gender and gender-equal society. Supported the sharing of good practices between the participating organizations in working with media, social media, and addressing gender. Equipped the participants with the skills necessary to create media and social media messages, aiming to encourage them to share their opinions, thoughts, and contribute to creating a gender-equal society. Mainstreamed the lessons learned during the activity through online activities, such as media challenges, workshops on media and gender, and local peer-to-peer meetings on media and gender. Provided participants with an opportunity to create new partnerships and work on ideas for future projects that could be implemented with the support of the Erasmus+ Programme.
