First and foremost was the format of the youth exchange: young people from Poland and Germany were to be given the opportunity to take part in an exchange program who would otherwise hardly have the chance to do so due to the fewer opportunities they have in their everyday lives. Our goal was to let the participants experience the process of competence development in a playful way by using LEGO Education. To get to know learning as a complex concept and not a working off of school assignments, where different disciplines complement each other and do not exclude each other. Modern society is dominated by mathematics, science, technology, and engineering. With the increasing development of technology, more and more emphasis is placed on developing "21st century skills." Therefore, with our extracurricular project, we wanted to enable participants* to learn through concrete experiences that go beyond science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (i.e. STEM). Since the reality in our society requires much more than that, it should be about the crucial process of creativity and innovation. Complementing the existing STEM approach in the German-speaking world, the STEAM method, extended by the artistic, creative component, should now be used to work on common solutions and test possibilities across countries. In the end, participants should be able to arrive at similar solutions in different ways, depending on what is most effective for them. In order for both gifted students and students with limited opportunities to reach their full potential. In summary, it can be described as: using LEGO building blocks in the context of the STEAM idea (or STEM + Art) from two nations to bring young people into an exchange about how they can work together and also on different solutions and approaches. All this is embedded in the environment of the climate-friendly youth education center in Babenhausen, which also tries to implement the sustainability goals in the house and grounds in order to give the participants impulses for a sustainable economy and life beyond the core project.
