Objectives

The “Youth and Ecosystem Services” exchange project had an aim to help young individuals to explore and understand the environment they live in and interact with from a new perspective. The topic of ecosystems hereby was selected as central with a narrower focus on services they provide. Thanks to intersection of the topic with both socioeconomic and environmental domains, it became possible to introduce the strong interdependence of sustainability and human welfare. Hereby, the purpose of the project was to draw attention of the youth on the most pressing environmental issues that have direct impact on their well-being, especially on the communal and regional levels. The deteriorated ecosystems that are commonly inherited by younger generation because of harmful practices were used as a vivid example. Both on the European as well as international level the expansion of anthropogenic impact into natural habitats is still on the rise despite of multiple actions planned and realised. Meanwhile the restoration of deteriorated ecosystems that are commonly inherited by younger generation can be achieved by civic engagement and mobilization of youth (European Green Deal – EC, 2019). To this end, the project pursued to impart the participants with knowledge and skill that may empower them, thus inducing to step up as a key stakeholders and lead processes towards green and sustainable practices. The consolidated action of the society where the youth often become the new role models has been proven to be an effective leverage for the policy change allowing to reach major targets specified in EU strategies. During the project the participants gained competences to distinguish diverse ecosystems, understand their unique features, identify the main services they deliver and recognise their importance for communities. Apart from that, by means of exchange project an opportunity was created to gradually engage young participants into the discourse, allowing them to shape their positions on the matter, reveal the existing challenges and try to formulate possible solutions. In this context, the “Youth and Ecosystem Services” youth exchange project has set the following bojectives: – Raise the awareness about major environmental challenges among participants, – Provide fundamental knowledge on various ecosystems and the related services, – Through field trips and workshops impart participants with practical competencies and skills in ecosystem management, – Provide skills necessary for identification of ecosystem services and for their valuation, – Draw linkages between ecosystem services and the social welfare on the example of real communities and their members, – Induce behavioural changes among participants by promoting sustainable, environmentally friendly practices, – Encourage participants’ involvement in social dialog, youth activism and decision-making processes to advocate sustainable environmental practices, – Enhance digital skills of participants by introducing various digital tools and technologies, – Familiarise participants with the European project, by explaining and promoting European values and principles. – Introduce Erasmus+ Programme and other EU platforms and opportunities for youth. Beyond its primary thematic focus, the project also placed considerable importance on aspects of environmental awareness and cultural diversity. It aimed to create a platform for individuals from various nationalities to not only exchange but also learn from each other’s cultural traditions, mindsets, and values. This in turn helped to broaden and transform their own value systems and perspectives on reality. An attempt was made to present and convey the European values, leading participnats through dynamic adaptation tanks to which the intolerance and disrespect towards diverse cultures has reduced, eventually contributing into pan European a deeper integration. Equally important was the project’s commitment to encouraging an environmentally conscious lifestyle. The project was designed not just to provide theoretical knowledge about environmental issues but also to push practical green habits through daily activities and routines. By integrating small, eco-friendly changes and establishing specific rules, the project enabled young people to move beyond a side-viewer role and start applying environmental practices in their daily lives.
