Objectives

With this youth exchange, we wanted to gather 32 queer young participants and group leaders from around Europe and North Africa in Berlin to do our second exchange on drag. We wanted to create a safer space for exchange, empowerment, creativity and active citizenship. Through training the participants in drag aesthetics and gender performance, we allowed them to find a way of expressing their experiences with gender roles, discrimination, oppression and being different in an art form that is rooted in queer politics and queer history. We believe that creativity helped them in finding more self-confidence despite being part of a marginalized identity and having experienced a childhood and youth of internalized shame. With this project, we brought together a conglomerate of organizations that we would like to create a partnership with long-term to empower queer youth around Europe and North Africa to become active citizens. Because we think that there are not enough projects for and with queer youth on a European and international level, even though internationalizing queer youth work is a big opportunity to promote European values and European identity among the queer community as well as creating stronger networks, and thus more ability to fight for human rights, across the continent. The objectives of this project were: 1. Create a safer space for queer youth from around Europe to be themselves, both at the youth exchange and in their daily lives after the project. 2. Promote young queer people’s active citizenship and increase their participation in society and queer politics through art and theater 3. Foster mutual understanding and solidarity between young queer people in different European countries 4. Enhance creativity among queer youth as a way of self-expression and dealing with discrimination 5. Promote Erasmus+ as an opportunity for the participants and the queer scene in Berlin 6. Create new long-lasting partnerships between organizations from all around Europe working with queer youth 7. Promote European values of democracy, human rights, gender equality and non-violence
