The primary aim of implementing the "My Strong Mental Health" Youth Exchange project was to empower young individuals with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to manage their mental health proactively. We sought to create a supportive and educative environment where participants could explore various aspects of mental well-being, learn from each other, and develop personal strategies for dealing with stress, anxiety, and the challenges of daily life. By bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds, the project aimed to foster a sense of community, mutual understanding, and shared learning, ultimately contributing to the reduction of stigma associated with mental health issues and promoting a more inclusive and empathetic society. Our goal was to gather 30 participants from five different countries—Germany, Latvia, Greece, Czech Republic, and Turkey—creating a diverse and dynamic group that could learn from each other’s experiences and cultural perspectives. The primary ambition of the project was to equip these young people with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of mental health in today’s world. We aimed to achieve several key results: * Empowerment through Education: We sought to demystify the subject of mental health, providing comprehensive education on its various facets, from understanding the science behind mental well-being to recognizing signs of mental health issues. The goal was to empower participants with the knowledge to take proactive steps towards their own mental health and to support those around them. * Skill Development for Resilience: By teaching practical skills for managing stress, anxiety, and everyday challenges, we aimed to foster resilience among participants. These skills included mindfulness techniques, stress reduction strategies, and the establishment of healthy daily routines. Our objective was to see participants integrate these practices into their lives, promoting long-term mental health. * Creation of a Supportive Community: Bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds, we aimed to cultivate a supportive community where participants could share their experiences and learn from each other. This exchange was intended to break down barriers, challenge stigmas associated with mental health, and foster a sense of solidarity and understanding. * Long-Term Behavioral Change: Ultimately, we wanted to initiate a ripple effect—participants leaving the project would not only implement what they learned in their own lives but also become advocates for mental health in their communities. We aimed to see an increase in dialogue about mental health, a reduction in stigma, and participants taking action, such as seeking therapy or engaging in community support activities. * Personal Growth and Transformation: We envisioned the project as a catalyst for personal growth and self-discovery. By participating in a range of activities—from workshops and discussions to a meaningful visit to the Sachsenhausen Memorial—participants would gain insights into their own mental health journeys, developing a deeper understanding of themselves and their capacities for growth and change. Our project was designed to be more than just an educational program; it was a holistic experience aimed at fostering a new generation of empowered, resilient, and empathetic individuals ready to face the challenges of mental health with confidence and support. The specific objectives of the "My Strong Mental Health" youth exchange were as follows: 1. Educate Participants on Mental Health: To provide participants with a solid understanding of mental health, including the physiological, psychological, and social aspects that contribute to mental well-being. 2. Develop Practical Skills: To equip participants with practical skills and techniques for stress management, emotional regulation, and self-care, encouraging the adoption of healthy routines and coping mechanisms. 3. Foster Peer Learning and Exchange: To create opportunities for participants to share their experiences, knowledge, and coping strategies, enriching the learning experience through diverse perspectives and peer support. 4. Enhance Awareness of Mental Health Issues: To increase awareness of mental health issues among participants, thereby contributing to the destigmatization of mental health challenges and promoting open discussions on the topic. 5. Promote Cultural Exchange and Mutual Understanding: To leverage the diverse backgrounds of participants as a means to enhance intercultural dialogue, understanding, and solidarity, further enriching the project’s learning environment. 6. Encourage Personal Growth and Self-Reflection: To provide a safe space for participants to engage in self-reflection, explore their personal mental health journeys, and identify areas for growth and improvement.
