Objectives

The project ‘Connecting young people to green future through ESC’ intended to increase the quality and quantity of volunteering activities for young adults in ecovillages and other sustainability projects, offering the volunteers a rich learning opportunity about all four dimensions of sustainability (ecological, social, economical and cultural), promoting active citizenship as well as values like tolerance, solidarity, inclusion of diversity and respect. The project consisted of a training and networking event for youth workers enabling the participants and participating organisations to carry out successful international volunteering activities for youth of high quality, including through the European Solidarity Corps. Many sustainable communities and initiatives have a long experience in hosting volunteers at local, national and international level. Thanks to the characteristics and skills of the entities involved, these volunteering projects have been valuable non-formal and informal learning opportunities for participants in the fields of active participation, social cohesion, sustainable lifestyle development and environmental protection. This project was a follow-up to the strategic partnership ‘volunteering - solidarity - sustainability’ (VSS) that had finished in June 2022. This 18-month partnership for exchange of good practice between 4 ecovillages (Freundeskreis Ökodorf/Sieben Linden, Germany; Cloughjordan Community Farm, Ireland; Ananda Gaori, Denmark; Ängsbacka, Sweden) has developed a brochure and website about good practice of volunteering projects in ecovillages, and those project results directly fed into the proposed project presented here. Sustainable Communities and Initiatives offer non-formal and informal learning opportunities both through workshops and seminars and through the immersive experience of a sustainable lifestyle. Their educational approach combines care for the planet with the creation of economically and socially sustainable and inclusive social structures respecting cultural diversity, promoting active citizenship, entrepreneurial thinking and creativity. The integration of these aspects overcomes the practical obstacles faced by those who want to adopt a sustainable lifestyle within the urban consumer society, and offers anyone approaching these realities support and inspiration for integrating these changes into daily life. The immersive experience involved in volunteering in a community or sustainable initiative is therefore a great learning opportunity that can encourage and stimulate behavioural change towards adopting lifestyles consistent with combating climate change. Other objectives of the project were to integrate international youth volunteering opportunities in which members participate into a peer-to-peer learning network and to facilitate members' access to the ESC programme and extend collaborations within the consortium, allowing organisations with different levels of experience to learn from each other. The project also aimed to disseminate the opportunities represented by sustainable communities and initiatives in the youth and voluntary sectors to stimulate the adoption of sustainable lifestyles.
