Inclusion of marginalised young peoplePreventing racism and discriminationReception and integration of refugees and migrants

Objectives

In this globalized world, the issue of migration has become an actual challenge for Europe since critics have already started to question the concept of multiculturalism and consider it a failure. The new problem of ''migrant phobia'' in Europe has become a serious threat to European societies, especially considering the recent migration crisis with Syrian and Ukrainian refugees. Lack of cultural awareness leads to the rhetoric of racism, intolerance, and xenophobia against migrants as well as stipulates massive human rights violations. This mainstream criticism comes also from people's inability to focus on solutions for better integration of migrants rather than promoting anti-migrant rhetoric. According to the latest (2020) available figures from UNHCR, there are 3.674.800 Syrians under Temporary Protection (SuTP) out of 5.654.800 foreign nationals (including Irani and Iraqi) present in Turkish territory seeking international protection. Moreover, migration largely affected youth, taking into account that a tangible percentage of migrants are young people. In reality, many young people face discrimination at schools, and universities and very often are subject to bullying. Nevertheless, youth are frequently excluded from public debates and discussions and their voice is not heard in the majority of cases. We believe that the alternative to multiculturalism can be the concept of interculturalism, which focuses more on intercultural dialogue, cultural exchange, and awareness. In this case, youth organizations and youth workers should be the ones to promote intercultural dialogue through human rights education among young people. As a reaction to the recent migration crisis, partners decided to develop a training course to empower youth workers to use intercultural dialogue as a tool in combating intolerance towards migrants, fostering mutual understanding, and creating better integration mechanisms in shaping a more inclusive Europe. The main objectives of the project were as follows: -To provide a conceptual framework on main notions, such as refugee, migrant, asylum seeker, immigration, integration, interculturalism, and multiculturalism -To reflect on the emigration and immigration situation in participating countries and find out the reasons for migration, namely push and pull factors -To discuss and analyze the current migration challenges in Europe and try to offer solutions from the perspective of youth work -To foster tolerance, respect, and open-mindedness towards migrants while working with young people -To share experiences and best practices of integration mechanisms -To work on follow-up projects addressing the issues related to the topic and develop future cooperation.
