Objective 1 – To provide learners with up-to-date knowledge needed to navigate all the different ways of improving sustainability in everyday life in the areas of Food, Clothing, Transportation, Travel, Plastic Waste, and Energy Consumption, and to provide the skills needed to convert this knowledge into action. Objective 2 – To teach people how to reach a large public audience when trying to affect other people's attitudes toward sustainability through podcasting. Objective 3 – To document how to convert the Guidelines developed by the project into practice. This is done by letting real people document and reflect on their process, while they are following the guidelines from the Video-guides. Objective 4 – To develop, test, and maintain a high-quality OER (Open Educational Resource) providing an innovative learning environment for the results produced.
Today's youth has more acutely felt the urgency of saving the planet than ever. They are preoccupied with living a sustainable life, including what to wear, how to travel, how to dispose of waste, and how to use energy sparingly. Most are concerned about the extent of their daily footprint and want to know what alternatives and changes need to be made. The SustainCast project addressed these issues among the youth through podcasting, teaching young people how to produce their podcasts on climate issues. It uses the EU's GrenComp as a basis for developing project products. Podcasts are one of the fastest-growing media formats in all of Europe. On average, 28% of Europeans said that they have listened to podcasts within the last month. A podcast is easy to distribute, and you can listen to it when you do other things. Podcasts come in many formats, from very well-produced shows with music and sound effects to just one person with a microphone talking. We believe that the podcast format is better at providing a reflection space than say a YouTube video, and it is for this reason that we have chosen to work with them.
