Objectives

The prosperity of a democratic society lies in the active participation and involvement of the members of society. However, there are many people whose voice is not heard and who are turned off from participation in the processes of decision-making, especially it concerns youth from cultural minorities. With our project, we promoted youth participation in form of active engagement in youth communities. In our communities, we have experienced that once active young people from cultural minorities become more engaged in the youth work and education as young leaders, they report receiving less professional support, and guidance. We define young youth leaders are those who are young people themselves leading teams of peers, organising international and local projects, educational and cultural events, namely, in other ways impacting their local community. Specifically, the opportunities within Estonia and Latvia for growth and development for young leaders from a Russian-speaking minority are very limited because of cultural and language obstacles, as well as a lack of information and educational opportunities, tied to their needs. Therefore, the involvement of Russian-speaking young people in Estonian and Latvian society stays at a low level which is also backed by studies regarding youth work, youth entrepreneurship, active citizenship and participation in decision-making processes on different levels. Through our project, we have created opportunities for young people from Latvia and Estonia to exchange experiences, сreate joint initiatives, and develop the competencies needed to be leaders in their communities. The main focus of the project was to support, empower and equip young leaders with the necessary resources to increase their impact on their local communities. With regard to competencies, we focused on the development of 8 specific domains of leadership: group dynamics, team management, mindful decision-making, embodied leadership, non-violent and assertive communication, learning design, involvement of participants and stress management. By the end of the project, we achieved the following objectives to a great extent: 1. Participants got competencies in all 8 domains we chose at the beginning of the project and evaluated those in their everyday reflection, considering the possible implementation of new competencies in their practice as young youth leaders. 2. Participants and leaders from both organisations had a chance within the main activity to share their competencies, experiences and best practices with others. 3. Both partner organisations involved active young youth leaders from their Russian-speaking communities and introduced the opportunities to participate and be engaged as well as participants planned their own projects\clubs\activities to run in their organisation. 4. Young people from VitaTiim and YoungFolks have planned and already implemented some common activities within the timeline of the project and after. Also, project participants have carried out some structural changes in their local clubs\communities\activiteis to increase the participation of young people in their organisation.
