The project had three main objectives that encompass the entire school community, including the Second Chance School of Mytilene, teaching staff, and students. Firstly, we wanted to bolster the School's openness and internationalization. Secondly, we tried to advance and update the professional skills of the teaching staff, with a particular emphasis on intercultural education principles and experiential techniques. Thirdly, the project aimed at cultivating a positive classroom environment by promoting peaceful coexistence among all students. The project envisioned a holistic enhancement of the educational experience at the Second Chance School, fostering an environment that enriches the educational practices and also actively contributes to the broader goal of social integration for the diverse student population.
The project primarily focuses on providing training for teaching staff to implement practices that enhance the social integration of refugees and migrants, fostering communication and social cohesion within and beyond the classroom. The Second Chance School of Mytilene, Lesvos, situated in a multicultural environment, necessitates unique management strategies to facilitate the harmonious coexistence of diverse ethnic groups and cultures with the locals. Notably, there is a growing interest among asylum seekers and migrants in seeking employment and establishing permanent residency on the island or the Greek mainland. This shift in priorities at the Second Chance School of Mytilene, as well as other organizations, reflects a move from immediate humanitarian support to systematic educational and professional interventions. These interventions are designed to promote social inclusion of the refugee and migrant populations as well as the locals’ acculturation to the new situation. The broader goal of the organisation is fostering sustainable integration within the community by providing education to both greeks and foreigners.
